Ka’anapali Beach – West Maui

Ka’anapali Beach is called many different names, some you can find by reading various free magazines around Maui and others you will hear from the locals. Some of the names you might hear include North Beach (Keka’a), and Canoe (Hanake’o’o). In addition, you will also find a portion of the Ka’anapali Beach called Dig Me Beach. Honestly, Ka’anapali Beach is everything from Black Rock on the southern tip to Canoe Beach, more specifically from the Sheraton to the Hyatt.

If you only visit one beach while in West Maui, this should be the one. This is one of the best beaches in all of Maui. Yes, everyone knows this and it can become quite busy, however, it is big enough to accommodate all that wish to enjoy this beautiful beach. During the day or morning is probably the best time to visit since most people are waiting to visit until the evening.

The sunset view from Ka’anapali Beach is one of the most breath taking sights in all of Maui. During the evening hours, the concrete walk along the beach can be crowded as couples enjoy strolling hand in hand to see the sunset. There is a quiet calm as the sun begins to set and all eyes watch the magnificent sunset. Then the entire place is once again busy as usual.

Just because the beach is busy does not mean it is loud, you can still enjoy a quiet conversation. Evening hours is of course the most popular time to visit Ka’anapali Beach. The draw is the sunset, the dinner cruises, and the delectable meals served at the restaurants along the beach.

The north end of Ka’anapali Beach is the most popular and probably the most beautiful. Finding a parking place on the north end may be hard but if you come early enough you can find one somewhere along the beach. Another option is to park at the Whalers Shopping Center. If you spend $ 10 at any of the shops, they will validate your parking. This can come in quite handy if you cannot find a parking spot. The best advice is to come early if you wish to watch the sunset, or you may not find a good parking spot.

The waters at Ka’anapali Beach are wonderful when they are calm. Many people love snorkeling at Black Rock on the northern end of the beach. The middle area is good for swimming or bodysurfing, but only when the surf is not up. It is not advised to go swimming when the surf is up. The best area of the beach for swimming and snorkeling is the north end from Ka’anapali Ali’i Resort to Black Rock, where the water is clear. The southern end has a reef close to the shoreline and is known for having quite a bit of seaweed, from the Hyatt to the Marriott.

No matter, what beach you visit while visiting West Maui, this is the one you must take time to see especially if you desire to see a sunset like no other on earth. If you have children, it is also a nice beach for them to enjoy splashing around in the water in the middle section and north end. You can spend an entire day at this beach and enjoy the sun, sand, and delicious food at the nearby restaurants. If you are staying in West Maui, then you can enjoy several days if you just wish to relax and watch the surf.
