West Maui Beaches

West Maui has quite a few of awesome beaches that are usually overlooked by everyone heading off to South Maui, so if you are lucky you may find these not as crowded.

Punalau Beach is also known as Keonehelele’i Beach and Windmill Beach but they are in fact talking about the same beach. During winter months, it is a wonderful beach to sit and enjoy the sight and sounds of the surf while in summer the seas are a bit calm making snorkeling fun even if it is shallow. The lave beach itself is only 1/3 mile long and is accessible by a dirt road east of mile marker 34. Of course, you will have to park and walk a few minutes to reach it.

Slaughterhouse Beach has quite a bit of sand in the summer but during the winter, it can almost disappear. To reach this beach, you will need to park near mile marker 32 on Highway 30 and walk down to Slaughterhouse Beach

Honolua Bay has no sand beach and may be quite hard to reach unless the seas are calm. This is one of the most popular snorkeling and scuba diving spots. If it has been raining a lot, the water will not be as clear and this type of water activity will not be as enjoyable. Honolua Bay is also a reserve; this means that fish cannot be killed so you should be able to enjoy all types of fish that call the area home. To reach this beach first you need to reach Slaughterhouse Beach and walk ½ past this beach until you reach a road. Here you take the road around a gate for a 4-minute walk and you are there.

D.T. Fleming Beach Park is a nice place to swim the majority of the time when seas are calm, however, when the surf is up so are the rip currents. Here you will enjoy a long wide beach with lots of nice shade, picnic tables, lifeguards, showers and restrooms.

On the ocean front side of all those resorts, you will find Oneloa Beach. This long, lavish beach is normally un-crowded. Not of the beach is great for swimming or snorkeling, however, if you walk to the left third of the beach you will be excited if you wish to jump in for a swim. To find this great diamond in the rough take Office Road until you reach the dead end, turn left and then turn right on Ironwood Lane.

Kapalua Beach is where practically everyone goes to swim. The bay helps to keep the wind down and the seas calm. You can access this beach from Kapalua Bay Hotel or at Sea House Restaurant at Napili Kai condominiums.

Napili Beach is one of the most popular beaches in West Maui. It normally has calm seas and is blocked from the wind. Since it is a popular beach, it can become crowded. You can reach this beach from Hui Drive or Napili Place.

Keonenui Beach is a very pretty beach with white sand but narrow. You can reach this quiet beach from Kahana Sunset on Lower Honoapililani Road along the shoreline path.

Kahekili Beach Park is another great beach where you will find covered tables, restrooms, showers, and plenty of parking. Shore diving, snorkeling, swimming, and fun beach activities are what this beach is all about. You can reach this magnificent beach off Highway 30 between mile markers 25 and 26 by taking Kai Ala Drive.

These are just a few of the most popular beaches on West Maui, there are more that you might wish to discover if you want to venture to every beach in the area.
