A Guide to Packing for Maui

If you are getting ready for a trip to Maui , you should of course know what type of items you should pack.

Of course, you know the basics. You should always bring along any medications, prescriptions, eyeglasses, and personal items including photo identification, these are just things you would normally bring along on any vacation. Bring along your driver’s license and car insurance if you plan to rent a car.

You might overlook a few things; hopefully, this list will give you some more ideas of items you may wish to bring.

Since you will be visiting the beaches and the ocean or will be out in the sunlight the majority of the time it is best to bring waterproof sunblock. The recommended sunblock is SPF 15 or higher. Any time you are outdoors whether on one of the beautiful beaches or out sightseeing you will be in the sun. If you are not use to the sun south of the equator, you may not be too happy when you realize that you have received sunburn, even while you were underwater. Do not forget to use sunscreen on your feet, ears, lips, and even your scalp if it is bare. You probably will want to bring along a hat or cap for sun protection as well. Sunglasses are another item many people forget to bring along.

Most people bring along at least two bathing suits. This way you will always have a spare, one for sunbathing and one for swimming. Or just to have an extra, so you can always have a dry one to wear.

According to what you will be doing while you are visiting, you may need a variety of shoes. Flip-flops or sandals are worn around hotels, beaches, and even around town. It is best to bring along a pair of tennis shoes that you do not mind throwing away, hiking shoes, and reef shoes. You may wish to get out and hike to see Maui for more than just its beaches.

If you plan to do any snorkeling, you may wish to bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins. You can also find many places to rent all kinds of watersports equipment for snorkeling, snuba, and scuba diving. If you decide to rent equipment, you can always leave this off your list and have more room for other items.

Warm clothing is appropriate for trips to Haleakala and of course, extra clothing that you do not mind getting dirty for hiking, biking, and horse back riding.

Light rain jacket is especially nice for the upcountry areas away from the beaches.

Shorts and summer attire is always the most comfortable unless you are hiking or visiting areas in the upcountry which is a bit cooler than the oceanfront areas.

A fanny pack or other waist pack is usually easier to carry around that will hold everything you need. If you plan on many watersports then it would be best to invest in one that is waterproof. You really do not want to lug around large purses to carry all the items you wish to have with you will out sightseeing, sunbathing, hiking, or whatever else you decide.

Mosquito repellant is always a good item to remember since there are mosquitoes around on some of the hikes that you might wish to enjoy.

Remember to bring your camera and extra film since you are sure to want to take many pictures. You may even decide in investing in a camera that you can use underwater so you can take some photos while you are snorkeling. These would be some of the most wonderful treasures to share with family and friends once your vacation is over.
